Although this could very well be a picture of me finding a new treasure at a favorite nursery, it's actually an illustration by David Catrow for a children's book called Plantzilla.

Wednesday Vignette: Poppies, Poppies!

Papaver orientale or Oriental Poppies in glorious bloom in the garden of Sylvia Matlock and Ross Johnson.

Wednesday Vignette is hosted each week by Anna at Flutter and Hum.  Click on over to her blog to see more.

Pollinators love every member of the Papaveraceae that I've ever grown.  Georgia O''keeffe is not a polinator BTW.

    1. Oh dear or should that be oh deer? I didn't know that your big four-legged slugs liked poppies.

  6. Are you certain Georgia O'keeffee isn't a pollinator? 'cause her attraction to red poppies suggests otherwise :-)
Such beautiful pictures. I LOVE poppies and the seed head too. Which is why I have about 300,000 to pull out this year...

    1. They are a pretty spectacular family! I think your big poppy patch is mostly Papaver somniferum which has the most attractive seed heads of the clan. They do like to reseed!

  7. "And now, my beauties, something with poison in it, I think. With poison in it, but attractive to the eye, and soothing to the smell. Poppies... Poppies. Poppies will put them to sleep. Sleeeeep. Now they'll sleeeeeeeep!"

    1. I'm running out of sunny space which they love. Just scatter some seeds and you'll have them!

    1. I'll bet the perennial oriental poppies would do well in your garden, Nadezda. Thank you, I'm glad you liked the photos.

  10. I always read that Oriental Poppies will not thrive here. I may have to prove that for myself. Stray California Poppies are still sending out random blooms.

    1. I wonder if Papaver somniferum would grow well there. They love the heat but am not sure about the humidity. They're a reseeding annual and seed about generously!
